Measuring Up: How to Make Sure Your New Sofa Will Fit

Buying a new sofa should feel exciting, not stressful. But before you fall in love with a shape, style or fabric, there is one simple question worth answering first: will it fit? Not just in your room, but through the front door, down the hallway, around any tight corners, up the stairs, or into the lift.

At Zofa, we believe sofa shopping should be simple from start to finish. That’s why we give you clear product dimensions, helpful door width checks, and clever design features that make delivery easier. From detachable arms on our Signature Collection to individually packaged Modular Collection segments, our sofas are designed to fit where others can’t.

Here’s how to measure up before you order, so you can choose your perfect sofa with confidence.

Why Sofa Measurements Matter

A sofa does not just need to look right in your living room. It needs to make it all the way there first.

That means checking every part of the route into your home, including:

  • Your front door
  • Porches and entranceways
  • Internal doors
  • Hallways
  • Staircases
  • Landings
  • Lifts
  • Tight corners
  • Low ceilings
  • Radiators, bannisters and light fittings

The good news? A few simple checks can save a lot of stress on delivery day. And with Zofa, we make those checks as easy as possible.

Start With the Product Page

Before you reach for the tape measure, start with the sofa you are looking at.

Every Zofa product page includes clear dimensions, so you can understand the size of your chosen sofa before ordering. You’ll also find a handy door width check dimension on our sofa product pages, designed to make it easier to see whether the sofa can pass through your access points.

For our Signature Collection, we go one step further. Because every Signature sofa is fitted with detachable arms as standard, the product pages also show the sofa dimensions without the arms attached. This gives you a much more realistic idea of how the sofa can be moved through tighter spaces.

It’s one of the reasons we say: our sofas fit where others can’t.

Step 1: Measure Your Room

First, check that the sofa will work in the space where it is going to live.

Measure the area where the sofa will sit, then think about how you move around the room. A sofa may technically fit, but you still want enough space for coffee tables, side tables, doors, walkways and everyday life.

It’s worth checking:

  1. The width of the wall or space where the sofa will sit
  2. The depth available from the wall into the room
  3. The height of any windowsills, radiators or shelves nearby
  4. The space needed to walk comfortably around the sofa
  5. The position of doors, fireplaces and other furniture

For small corner sofas, double check which side the longer section needs to be on. This will help you choose the right layout before placing your order.

Step 2: Measure Your Doorways

Next, check the access into your home. Open your door fully and measure the clear opening from side to side. This is the usable space the sofa has to pass through, not just the size of the door itself.

You should also measure the height from the floor to the underside of the frame, especially if the sofa may need to be turned or tilted.

Don’t forget to check for anything that could reduce the available space, such as:

  • Door handles
  • Draft excluders
  • Doormats
  • Shoe racks
  • Radiators
  • Coat hooks
  • Light fittings
  • Porch doors
  • Narrow entrance halls

Measure your front door, then do the same for any internal doors between the entrance and the room where the sofa is going.

Then compare your measurements with the door width check on the Zofa product page.

Step 3: Check Hallways, Corners and Stairs

This is the part that is easiest to miss. A sofa might fit through the front door but still get stuck around a corner, at the bottom of the stairs, or on a narrow landing.

Measure the narrowest parts of your hallway and make sure there is enough turning space where the sofa needs to change direction. If your sofa needs to go upstairs, measure the staircase width, ceiling height, and the space at the top and bottom of the stairs.

If you live in a flat or apartment, also check:

  • The lift door opening
  • The internal lift size
  • The space outside the lift
  • The width of communal corridors
  • Any stair access as a backup

If anything looks tight, don’t panic. This is exactly where Zofa’s design features can help.

What If Your Access Is Tight?

Tight doorway? Narrow hallway? Awkward corner? This is where choosing the right sofa makes all the difference.

Choose the Signature Collection for Detachable Arms

Our Signature Collection sofas are designed with detachable arms as standard.

That means the arms can be removed for delivery, reducing the overall size of the sofa and making it easier to move through narrow access points. Once your sofa is in place, our team can fit the arms for you, so it is ready to enjoy.

It’s a simple feature, but it can make a huge difference in homes where a standard fixed-arm sofa might not fit.

So, if you have a narrow doorway, a tight turn or an awkward hallway, the Signature Collection is a great place to start.

Choose the Modular Collection for Easier Delivery

Our Modular Collection is another smart option for trickier homes.

Each segment is individually packaged, making the sofa much easier to move through doors, corridors, stairwells and lifts. Instead of trying to manoeuvre one large sofa frame through your home, the sofa arrives in separate sections and is assembled in the room.

It’s flexible, practical and ideal for modern living, especially if you want a larger sofa but have limited access.

Use the Door Width Check

Every Zofa sofa product page includes a door width check to help you understand whether your chosen sofa is suitable for your home.

This takes away the guesswork and gives you a clear measurement to compare against your access points. Measure the narrowest part of your route, check it against the product page, and you’ll have a much better idea of what will work.

Our Delivery Team Is Here to Help

At Zofa, delivery is designed to be as smooth as possible. Our premium delivery team will bring your sofa into the room of your choice, unpack it, fit the arms and feet if needed, and take away the packaging unless you’d prefer to keep it.

Before delivery, it’s important to let us know about anything that could make access more difficult, such as stairs, tight corners, restricted parking, lifts or narrow entrances. The more we know in advance, the better we can prepare.

And, if you’re unsure before ordering, our team is always happy to talk through your measurements and help you choose a sofa that works for your home.

A Simple Measuring Checklist

Before placing your order, check:

  1. Your room width and depth
  2. The space where the sofa will sit
  3. The sofa’s full product dimensions
  4. The door width check on the Zofa product page
  5. The dimensions without arms, if choosing a Signature Collection sofa
  6. Your front door opening width and height
  7. Any internal door widths and heights
  8. Hallway widths
  9. Corner turning space
  10. Stair width and landing space
  11. Lift opening and internal lift size, if needed
  12. Any radiators, bannisters, shelves or light fittings on the route

If the sofa needs to clear it, measure it.
